The tank ventilation system is to normalize the pressure of the tank to the atmosphere. Continuous pumping of liquid into the tank will increase the pressure of the tank. Without the ventilation/air pipe, overpressure may happen. In some cases special attention might be needed for air pipe from black water tank and fuel oil tank.

The sounding system is for measuring the tank volume. Although a tank of the vessel may be equipped with a sensor to determine the liquid level in the tank, the sounding system is still needed.

Below are some of the general rules that are practiced by most of the class.
  1. Both of the system piping must be kept as straight as possible.
  2. Air pipes are to be fitted at the highest part of the tanks and far apart from the filling pipes.
  3. All sounding pipes are to be led to positions above the bulkhead deck which are at all times accessible.

More information on the rules for the Tank Ventilation and Sounding system for the vessel can be obtained from class.
